Willington History Group 2016-17 Programme

In view of the increased attendances and healthier finances over the last year the group is looking forward with confidence to next year`s programme. Each talk is illustrated and will take place in the Old School, Castleway from 7.30 p.m. Admission at £3 includes refreshments.

13th October, 2016 AGM followed by a presentation by Alan Gifford on "A Changing Derby" illustrated with photographs taken over the last 50 years of how the city has altered.

Nov 10th, 2016 "A History of Prisons" by Richard Papworth based on his long career in the Prison Service

Dec 8th, 2016 "Christmas is Coming", an illustrated talk by Keith Blood on many of the customs associated with Christmas festivities.

Jan 12th, 2017 ''How to Get Rid of Your Wife" by Richard Stone. A sure-fire winner dealing with the facts and fantasies around "divorce" etc and many surprises!

Feb 9th 2017 "Turmoil, Turnpikes and Taxes" by John Hawkins. How Britain was transformed during the 18th Century.

March 9th 2017 "The Great Exhibition of 1851" by Rachel Salmon. How Britain showed its products, wealth and Empire to the World!

April 13th 2017 ''Boarding Schools for Girls in Victorian Derbyshire" by Liz Keeley. The education of genteel young ladies, often brutal, often surprising and always interesting.

May 11th 2017 A guided evening walk around Swadlincote led by Graham Nutt of the Magic Attic. A fountain of knowledge, anecdotes and humorous insights from an expert!
